The sunlit cottage against the dark brooding sky inspired me to paint this simple watercolour. I thought it would make an excellent demonstration to inspire those starting out in watercolour. I hope you find as enjoyable to paint as I did.
Hi everyone It’s great to be back and and making videos again after a long absence. My primary focus is to improve on my loose painting techniques and concentrate on injecting more colour into in my work. I’m pleased with the painting of Mevagissey fishing boats, I feel I’m heading in the right direction.
Hello everyone. I will use this down time to revaluate how PW is running and what value it is to the painting community at this time. I apologies for any inconvenience and any upset this may cause.

Best wishes to everyone and especially those valued members that have stayed with PW you have been a great to support.
It’s been a few months since doing any serious painting. Going back into it is making me look at everything with fresh eyes. I am identifying my weakness which there are many. My biggest weakness is my drawings skills. I can bluff my way through it but there is very little accuracy in what I draw.
I have been watching the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year on TV it made me feel so inadequate. My observation skills are poor. The programme made me think more about portraiture and how I can learn to draw and paint realistic loose portraits consistently from life and photographs. This process will also help me become more observant which will pay off when drawing most other subjects,
I’m starting with the basics currently learning about proportions, structure and the planes of the face. I’m really enjoying learning and going back to the beginning again. I will share a few of my recent drawings with you here. I am also thinking of making videos to accompany my progress.
35yrs ago I started painting Watercolour. This was my first serious painting after about 6 weeks of reading books and learning how to paint. A very timed watercolor. It might help you if you’re just starting out in watercolor. See where I want wrong and fast-track yourself to success quicker. After all, 35yrs is a long time to get where I am now.
My latest Youtube video is a demonstration of Dunnottar Castle Scotland painted in watercolour. Paint along with me and create your own piece of original art. My video will show you how I took on the challenge to paint this timeless beautiful scene. Painted on Saunders Waterford Hot Pressed Paper using Windsor and Newton Cotman watercolor paints.
