Hello everyone. I’m very sorry if you’ve come to PW to view the forums but due to Jerk spammers signing up and posting numerous spam posts I have decided to suspend the forums for the protection of all users. I will use this down time to revaluate how PW is running and what value it is to the painting community at this time. I apologies for any inconvenience and any upset this may cause.
Feel free to post a comment underneath. Due to spammer activity I have to evaluate each post before making public.
Best wishes to everyone and especially those valued members that have stayed with PW you have been a great to support.
It’s been a few months since doing any serious painting. Going back into it is making me look at everything with fresh eyes. I am identifying my weakness which there are many. My biggest weakness is my drawings skills. I can bluff my way through it but there is very little accuracy in what I draw.
I have been watching the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year on TV it made me feel so inadequate. My observation skills are poor. The programme made me think more about portraiture and how I can learn to draw and paint realistic loose portraits consistently from life and photographs. This process will also help me become more observant which will pay off when drawing most other subjects,
I’m starting with the basics currently learning about proportions, structure and the planes of the face. I’m really enjoying learning and going back to the beginning again. I will share a few of my recent drawings with you here. I am also thinking of making videos to accompany my progress.
35yrs ago I started painting Watercolour. This was my first serious painting after about 6 weeks of reading books and learning how to paint. A very timed watercolor. It might help you if you’re just starting out in watercolor. See where I want wrong and fast-track yourself to success quicker. After all, 35yrs is a long time to get where I am now.
My latest Youtube video is a demonstration of Dunnottar Castle Scotland painted in watercolour. Paint along with me and create your own piece of original art. My video will show you how I took on the challenge to paint this timeless beautiful scene. Painted on Saunders Waterford Hot Pressed Paper using Windsor and Newton Cotman watercolor paints.

Painters block is not much fun. You sit there looking at your paper wondering what to paint. To try and regain some inspiration I’ve decided to change the Watercolor paper I use from Arches 140lb Not Surface to Saunders Waterford Hot Pressed 140lb hoping that will liven things up a little. Not only the change in paper I’m also going to tackle subjects I find challenging. I’m starting off with flowers.
This video will give you some idea of the challenges I faced while painting this watercolor. If you have a go at this painting the image is attached below, so give it ago. I know there are a few artists on PW that can handle this subject easily. I would love to see what they can do.
I was getting a little frustrated today using 140lb not surface paper, felt like I needed a change. Went off down the art shop and picked up some Saunders Waterford Hot Pressed 140lb watercolour paper to play around with. I thought I’d video the exercise to show others how it went. The paper was great to paint on, Creating those lovely soft edges felt easier on a smoother paper. Thoroughly enjoyed the painting experience. The place I buy my paper from when using mail order in the UK is Ken Bromley very competitively priced. Its worth a look. I’m often asked which studio lights I use in my studio to give consistent bright lighting. I use my lights for watercolour painting and video lessons. There are many different studio lighting options available. My simple lighting system cost around £42.00 from Amazon and has served me brilliantly. Below is a short video that simply explains what I use.
After you’ve bought your lights how about taking part in one of our watercolor activities Follow this link to Paint with me
Hi all, Howard posted his painting on Pure Watercolour and needed a bit of help. I looked at the ref image and thought it would make an excellent lesson so thought it better to produce a video than to try to explain to Howard how I would do it.
Mines far from perfect but I enjoyed painting it very much. Hope you all have ago, looking forward to seeing your efforts.
