Nicely done. This is a very nice atmospheric scene. I am very jealous of how well you preserve your whites spaces.

I will be leaving ink cross-hatching alone from here on out.  That’s for sure.  This is an example of being compelled to create the details that should be ignored when painting.

Thank you for all of your kind comments.

I was inspired by Agathe; so much so that I stated that I would attempt painting some myself.  I complicated my composition a bit by choosing a photo reference that had a pile of fish.  I attempted to simplify it some.

I can say for myself that painting fish is not an easy task.  I could spend more time fussing on this, but I am sure I would on…[Read more]

What an interesting painting.  It does have a story to tell.  Well done. Obviously, you are confident in your brush strokes.

Jim, you have many great things going in this painting: your sky, the whites of the crashing waves, and the scale of the cliffs with the couple’s silhouetted images.  Nicely done.

Jim, yes yesterday was a great time spent with my Annie and was a lovely day. Many good lifetime memories have been made in this beautiful place.

My sketch will help my memories linger and will allow them to be passed on…

While I am still impressed with the colors I saw shining through these tree leaves, I hope I can create an image in my…[Read more]

    I like your fish.

My guess is that they are really hard to paint with watercolors.  Fish can reflect many different colors from their scales. Using opaque paints would make it easier, I think.   The way to paint fish with transparent watercolors I would think the artist would have to trust wet into wet techniques and mixing in different col…[Read more]

I like to paint portraits. I recently traded emails with Janet Rogers who is a professional watercolor artist who sells instruction videos and teaches how to paint portraits and expressive flower paintings.

I explained to her that I wanted to paint our great-granddaughter twins for a Christmas gift. She recommended that I use an image projector…[Read more]

Thank you.  Water and rocks are still difficult for me.  I’ll schedule more practice scenes…  Maybe I shot some scenes today while visiting Wolf Creek that will be worthy of painting. I’ll download my camera’s images and see.

Today I promised to take my Annie for a ride in our canyons and mountains to see the fall colors. We drove to Kamas where we bought their famous donuts at its Chevron station. From there we traveled through Francis near its rodeo grounds. The Paramount Yellowstone series is currently being filmed at the Utah Film Studios in Park City. I heard from…[Read more]

I completed my third Julie Gilbert Pollard painting today. Again it is a study of painting water and rocks. I believe I am gaining some good experience and confidence in the techniques I need to make these scenes realistic and better in my paintings.

My real test will be to paint scenes similar to these from my own sketches. I may get that…[Read more]

I am not sure why my two previous posts to this forum with this contents is not sticking.  I am now making my third attempt.

I have painted two more water and rock scenes.  My references were paintings made by Arizona artist Julie Gilbert Pollard.  I used masking fluid to preserve my whites and added my darks early with watercolors unlike Ju…[Read more]

With such great sketchbook entries like yours, I’ll never get the courage to paint in my sketchbooks. We’ll see.  I promised my Annie that this Friday we will venture into our canyons and mountains to capture this fall’s colors.

I enjoy your paintings. Please post more…

I need to find Patrick’s painting. I may also attempt painting it.  Looks like a nice lesson adventure.  Ita just that I have so many things planned and so little free time these days.

Dunnottar Castle Watercolour – Paint Along

I found this image on Pixabay and was drawn to it by the beautiful colours and play of light. I thought it would be a good lesson for myself in softening edges and creating colourful darks. I enjoyed painting it. I now to invite you to show me your interpretation of this timeless place. Don’t feel you have to follow my example. Paint, however, you feel at the time 🙂

The video and reference image can be found HERE.

Don’t forget to post your finished painting in the forums. Good Luck 🙂

My Painting.

When I was just a boy :) and learning to paint watercolour this was my best attempt after a few weeks of painting.

Painting Flowers In Watercolour – Hot Pressed Paper

I was stuck in a rut so decided to shake things up a little by changing paper and spending time tackling subjects I struggle with. Click here to see the video,  my attempt at flower painting.  There is a reference image attached so have a go and see how you get on. Please post your work in the forum as it inspires and helps others.
