Watercolour on Arches NOT paper. 1/4 imperial
I’ve wanted to paint a train for a while now, so when I saw this picture I knew I just had to paint it. 4464 Bittern is a London & North Eastern Railway Class A4 steam locomotive. Built for the LNER in 1937 at Doncaster Works as works number 1866, it was originally numbered 4464. Renumbered 19 on 16 August 1946 under the LNER 1946 renumbering scheme, it was renumbered 60019 by British Railways on 10 October 1948, after nationalisation. A Pacific 4-6-2 locomotive to the same design by Nigel Gresley as the more famous A4 Mallard and one of the 35 strong class, it is one of six to survive into preservation and is one of three currently certified for mainline use.
In preservation, the locomotive has also worn the identities of a number of its scrapped classmates, including the first of the A4 class 2509 Silver Link and most recently as 4492 Dominion of New Zealand.

Wonderful painting! Love how it pulls you into the picture. I think it’s the tracks that does this. The bright red signs are also great in the midst of all the greyish and brown colors. What did you use for the writing on the train? Seems so crisp and clear!

@agathe Hi Agathe. Yes, the tracks naturally lead you in to the focal point. The writing on the train is white gouache that I tinted with raw sienna. I did try to write it with masking fluid initially, but masking fluid is hard to use for fine work. Thanks for your comments.

Oh wow, so you painted it on with a paint brush? You’ve got steady hands! I’ve got myself a white pen for such work, but even then I struggle to get that sort of result. Though I would probably not use a pen for a painting such as that anyway, it’s mostly for my sketches. I am impressed! Also learned something new when you tagged me. Quite convenient because normally I don’t get a notification if someone replies me in their own posts. I will start doing that too! 🙂

Nice painting Pete. love the way you’ve created the steam billowing from under the bridge. Also, the dry brush work around the tracks to create texture is superb. Cracking painting. Thanks for sharing.

Pete, I wrote a long comment the other day on your gorgeous painting and now find it’s gone. I probably forgot to hit ‘submit’. Trying to remember what I said … I loved how you handled the steam coming from the train billowing around it, and I was really impressed with the grasses on the right. I also loved the blue you painted the train, and of course the tracks are eye stoppers!

I’m sorry I lost the post, but I’m so glad you uploaded this picture.
